The first event of the year on the World Tour was the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast, and it was an exciting affair. Jordy Smith looked like he had ‘the hunger’ and from his performances in the contest and in free surfing, it looked like it was going to be his event. As it turned out he places third, and the event was won by Taj Burrow, but Jordy had wowed the spectators and impressed the judges immensely, which is half the battle.

Now we’re down at Bells, and Jordy is always a stand-out there, as well as the better wave of Winkipop. The long walls of Winki are akin to Supertubes, Jeffrey’s Bay, and to see Jordy fly down the line is to see someone in a comfortable place, at ease with the wave and the speed run it provides. Straight in to the event, Jordy won his first round heat at small Bells, putting him straight through to the third round, and thus bypassing the tiresome second round. Jordy placed third at Bells last year and he placed third at Snapper. We think he’s going to go one better at this event.

Remember this? It happened a little while ago, and while so much has happened on the World Tour and in the world of surfing since then, it is still one remarkable single move. Surfers are doing Rodeo Flips more often these days and are pulling them off more frequently, but this is still one of the most amazing moves in the last 10 years of surfing.

The Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach is always a popular event, and despite the weather and freezing water, there is always red-hot action going down on the long walls of the main wave, Bells Beach.
Jordy Smith loves the walls of Bells, and his 5th placing last year is testament to this. After a wave-starved first heat at the event, Jordy came to life in round two, defeating local wild card Adam Robertson. The event was moved down to the longer and faster walls of Winkipop, which is even more suited to the J-Bay expert, and he made quick work of his opponent.
The swell predictions are still looking good for the rest of the weekend and we might see a winner quite soon.

Its that time of the year again. The land breezes are just about to start puffing in the morning, the temperature are dropping slightly, and the windchill factor is starting to become a part of our surfing world.

It’s pretty simple really. The day is divided into two main parts when you go surfing. The cold morning session, and then the much warmer later session when the sun is streaming down and the land breeze has backed off.
