O’Neill Cold Water Classic Santa Cruz – day 1
Oct 20th
Santa Cruz, California– October 18, 2010 – The O’Neill Cold Water Classic California got off to a cracking start under clear blue skies, with a mellow 2 to 3 foot wave peeling off Steamer Lane.
“I love this event,” said Jason Collins – aka Ratboy – who posted the highest heat total of the day with a 14.33 out of a possible 20.
“I was stoked with my heat,” he said. “It’s hard when it’s small but the Lane has enough power so that you can get a score. I grew up surfing here before school, after school, and when I was ditching school, so I know how to deal with it sometimes.”
“I came here when I was 11 and watched the first ever contest here,” said Ratboy. “Two locals were in the final. It was amazing. I’ve surfed this event about 10 times. Every time I do it’s so much fun.”
With the swell looking to decrease from today’s 2-3 foot conditions, before picking up again towards the end of the week, contest organizers stormed through the local trials early in the morning and straight into the round of 128.
While the spectators were reveling in the action, it was slightly harder for trials winner Jonny Craft.
“It was kind of hard to have to do all of the trials and not even get out of the water before the last trial heat and my first heat in the Round of 128,” said Jonny. “It felt like surfing almost an hour heat, but I’m super stoked to make it through to the Round of 96. It’s great to compete in an event of the caliber in Santa Cruz,” he said.
Another highlight of the day featured the Geiselman brothers up against each other in the round of 128 with Evan finishing top ahead of his brother Eric, the runner up at the O’Neill Cold Water Classic Canada last week.
“I’m really happy to make it through with my brother,” Evan said. “I think I just got the best waves. I just wanted to go out there and be aggressive and get the best waves. I wanted my brother and I to be first and second, so I’m really happy.”

Peter Devries keeps expectant crowds happy as day two of the O’Neill Cold Water Classic heat produces shock exits

O’Neill Cold Water Classic Canada. October 9 – 15, 2010

Tofino, Canada – October 12, 2010 – It was a day of both highs and lows, as the O’Neill Cold Water Classic Canada returned once again to North Chestermans beach in clean 4 feet conditions to get stuck into the round of 48 here in Tofino.
The highs came for the gathering crowds on the beach as the local boys put on an impressive show. Sepp Bruhwiler came through the round of 96 before Peter Devries got into the water and stormed through his heat and into the round of 24 in a form reminiscent of his victory last year.
“I got a wave in the first couple of seconds,” said Peter. “It was nice to get that start going and feel comfortable right away. Local knowledge definitely helps,” he said. “Drawing Kekoa (Bacalso) on mushy beach break is probably a little easier than drawing him on big waves – and Stu (Kennedy) too.”
Former World Tour competitor Kekoa Bacalso as well as CWC Tasmania winner and current frontrunner in the CWC Series rankings, Stuart Kennedy, were just two shock exits at this stage in the competition.
Joining them was another former World Tour surfer, Tim Reyes, as well as Yadin Nicol, Dion Atkinson, Tim Curren and 2009 CWC California runner up Heath Joske.
On a more positive note, there was plenty of impressive action heating up the water today as the 6 Star ASP competition soared through to heat 8 in the round of 48. However whilst water temperatures are higher this year than last – around 13 degrees centigrade – Florida native Cory Lopez was taking no chances, dressed head to toe in rubber. “There is no way the cold water is going to touch me,” said Cory who advanced to the round of 24. “I have boots gloves, a hat – I cannot feel the water at all and I am definitely warm right now.”
His attire was in stark contrast to that of Julian Wilson who downsized his suit to a 3.2 and removed his gloves. “I’m not cold out there,” said Julian. “But I am catching loads of waves to keep warm, and I got that good wave out there because of that.”
Tomorrow all eyes will be on Shaun Cansdell. Shaun is the only surfer in the top 5 of the CWC Series rankings left in this competition and will be looking to make his mark and move towards that $50,000 prize money.
“I was just paddling out there thinking, wow. $50,000!” said Shaun after his first round heat this morning. “It puts a bit of pressure on, but it’s like in every comp. I just go out there and do my best and see what happens.”
The next call will be tomorrow October 13th at 7.30am for Heat 9 in the Round of 48

Peter Devries gives the locals of Tofino a scare before advancing in the dying minutes, as the O’Neill Cold Water Classic gets underway in 6 foot swell and sunshine.

Tofino, Canada – October 10, 2010 – The storms might have calmed for this second day at the O’Neill Cold Water Classic Canada, but the local community of Tofino were anything but calm as Peter Devries took to the water.
Last year’s CWC Canada winner and Tofino local, Peter gave the crowds on the beach a little bit of a fright as he looked set to be knocked out of his first round heat, before calmly pulling out the score he needed in the dying minutes behind one of the standouts of the morning – Timmy Reyes.
“I had a complete shocker out there today,” said Peter. “I just wasn’t feeling good on waves. I was lucky to get through. That last wave was good and I felt like I surfed it pretty bad so I wasn’t expecting the score,” he said.
In stark contrast to the stormy last few days in this remote western corner of Canada, the 6 Star ASP O’Neill Cold Water Classic awoke to gentle winds, clear blue skies and 6-foot surf for a 9am start at Chesterman’s Beach.
Australian former World Tour surfer, Jarrad Howse got things going in the first heat, posting the highest wave score, 8.17, and highest heat total of the day.
Also in the water and going through top of his heat was Australian Stuart Kennedy – currently second in the running for the O’Neill Cold Water Classic Series title and just back from an ankle injury: “It’s good to be in Canada,” he said. “I’ve got my dad with me. He works too much so I thought I would take him on holiday with me. Hopefully he’s my good luck charm!”
Talking about the CWC Series winner prize money to be awarded at the final event in Santa Cruz next week, Stuart said; “The $50,000 was in my head but it’s so hard to have that pressure. It’s something that I realized now is not worth worrying about.”
What was a worry on Chesterman’s Beach, however, was the tide. Exploring wild remote locations around the world was never meant to be straightforward, and the tide was the latest obstacle for the O’Neill Cold Water Classic Series to overcome.
With the new moon and huge swell, the high tide covers the entire beach, forcing contest director Matt Wilson to stop proceedings after heat 4, to remove everything from the beach, before the water did.
The next call will be tomorrow October 11 at 9am for heat 5 in the round of 96

Massive Tides force Short Day for ASP 6-Star O’Neill Cold Water Classic Canada
TOFINO, British Columbia/Canada (Sunday, October 10, 2010) – The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 6-Star O’Neill Cold Water Classic Canada cracked the opening round of competition today in four-to-six foot (1.75
metre) surf, but only completed four heats due to a massive incoming tide ready to swallow all of North Chesterman’s beach.
The O’Neill Cold Water Classic, the fourth of five stops on the O’Neill Cold Water Classic Series, has attracted several of the globe’s finest surfing talent in search of the valuable ratings points on offer towards their ASP
World Ranking to help their cause towards qualification for the ASP World Tour.

The O’Neill Cold Water Classic Canada
Oct 9 – Oct 15, 2010
Tofino, Canada – September 10, 2010 - The O’Neill Cold Water Classic Canada is returning to Vancouver Island for 2010, following an emotional first year in which Toifno local, Peter Devries took out Canada’s inaugural professional surf competition in his hometown.
“There is no better place to win a big event than at home in Tofino,” said Peter Devries. “I had so much support on the beach and to have my family and friends there was amazing.”
If ever one event on the five-event O’Neill Cold Water Classic Series best epitomized the series’ philosophy of exploration and adventure, this is it.
With bears on the land, whales in the sea and a spectacular old-growth pine forest backdrop, this 6 Star ASP (Association of Surfing Professionals) has pushed the boundaries to find new and challenging waves in which to host a competition of this level.
“This is going to be my first time to Canada,” said former World Tour surfer, Shaun Cansdell. “I’ve heard there are bears and lots of wildlife to see – which will be cool. And I’ve been looking forward to go surf some new waves.”
This year the mobile event takes on a new level with the Pacific Rim National Park reserve offering yet another break for the event to explore along the Vancouver Island coastline.
“To me this is one of the most beautiful surf locations on the planet,” said Peter Devries. “Combine that with the variety in weather and wave conditions we see in October and you’ve got an event unlike any other.”
This year will see Peter once again surfing his home break, along with over 140 others making the trek through the wilderness of western Canada to one of the most stunning – and of course freezing cold – events in professional surfing.
“I’ve already won the event so I don’t have anything to prove so there’s no pressure,” said the defending CWC Canada champion. “I want to go into it with the same mentality as last year and just have fun.”
He will be up against an international field of talent including the young Hawaiian, John John Florence, Nat Young, Cory Lopez and Dion Atikinson.
Also there will be South African, Royden Bryson, and Australians Stuart Kennedy, Shaun Cansdell and Dion Atkinson. All four surfers are in line for the O’Neill Cold Water Classic Series win – which comes with a $50,000 cheque – following the final event in Santa Cruz, California.
“I’ve been thinking about the series a bit and how good it would be to win it and the 50K,” said Shaun Cansdell. “I think I am sitting in the top 5 at the moment so I would have to do something pretty special in the next few events. But I will give it my 100% best.”
